The Precious gem that is Trust
She came in for our first Functional Integration session today. I could sense her pain in her voice. As she lay on the table, I could sense her anticipation of more pain, even as I approached to touch her.
She mentioned, perhaps she was feeling the anxiety of having been through other treatments that led her to associate touch with increased pangs of pain.
I spent the next 20 minutes, going deeper and deeper in my own Self Organization to provide for her the quality of touch that would give her the feeling of safety. These are the principles we delved into this week.
I knew that if I had even a sliver of losing my sense of length and equal-opposite support, she would feel it immediately.
After about 20 minutes, she gave me her trust. It was non-verbal. She knew it and I knew it. We treated that trust like the most precious gem in the whole world!
Our shared experience and our movements slowly grew from that trust. Her expressions of fear gave way to relief and then to curiosity about the sensations she was having.
She chuckled, got up and walked around, composed and slightly bewildered with the conspicuous absence of the pain that had become her constant companion. As I admired the exquisiteness of the change in her, she said to me, "I feel a letting go that I haven't felt in a REALLY long time. All my life, I have been trying to be. Now, I AM tall!"
It wasn't just her that was changed. I was changed too. That is the Power of Self Organization!
I felt gratitude for Moshe Feldenkrais, my teachers - Jeff Haller, Andrew Gibbons and the entire FTA staff for making it their life's work.
I felt a deep sense of responsibility to make it my life's work to reach as many lives as I can.
I also thought of my classmates. I know that when this class of the FTA graduates, it is going to be 'explosive'! This class is going to define the future of how the Feldenkrais Method will be lived, taught and spread.
I see YOU - my clients, students, readers as patrons on this journey that continues to lift us all into a higher and higher potential for ourselves! And when we have our moments, all we have to do is - reach with our arm's length. ;)
