Shrutee: When we started working together, what was the challenge that you wanted to overcome?
Jennifer: I’ve been dealing with this lower back ache, neck and shoulder ache for almost two years. It started in 2016 beginning. I was doing few chiropractor visits whenever I was in bad pain and wanted relief. I did that for a few weeks. Every week felt better after the visit but then I’d slide back into pain again. I decided this is not how I wanted to be fixed.
So I stopped going to chiropractor visits, I googled and found a few stretches. I did those in the mornings or evenings three times a week or sometimes went to the gym for a cardio. And that made me feel better as long as I did the routine. But if I broke this routine, the pain would come right back. And it’s the same thing, and I know that. And then I would go to the chiropractor again. And then I got pregnant. First thing was the nausea and then back pain all over again.
I decided this time I din’t want to do a chiropractic visit. I really wanted to find something that can stay with me and that is not just a temporary fix and I go back to the same pain.
I visited with my friend one Saturday and found out how you had helped my friend and her husband with their back pain. So I decided to give it a try. That’s how I started working with you!
S: How did this pain affect your life?
J: For the last 2 years ago, it's been terrible. It wouldn’t allow me to sit or stand for a long time or just even concentrate at work. It really affected my daily routine. At the beginning of the day, I felt a little better. But as the day went on, it would get really hard and by 8pm I would be done. I was tired of bearing the pain all day and would just go to bed putting my daughter to sleep.
[It wasn’t for a lack of trying to help herself that Jennifer didn’t get better. Actually, she was quite persistent and diligent about her regimen. Her frustration seemed to be that her improvement wasn’t sustained as if she constantly had to swim against the current to stay at a reasonable level of comfort. Can you imagine how exhausting this must be for her?!]
She makes the leap
S: How long was it before you started to notice a difference?
J: It was in the third week, that things really changed! I would say that I got respite in the first couple sessions but then the pain would start coming back. In the second session, you asked me if I noticed what I was doing that was bringing the pain back. That really stuck with me. The week after, I started to notice myself. And then when I came back, we got to know what was happening. Now I started getting relief in a way that my pain didn’t come back.
S: What changed?
J: It was the way I was sleeping, the way I was sitting, how I was standing, moving – basically how I was living my life!
When you analyze the way I move, you are finding out and telling me how my body is used to moving this way and what that means for the problem I’m having. And showing me, I could move another way that makes me feel better. When you do you that, I feel really good.
When you spend those last 10 minutes of our session, showing me how I can do it myself, I think to myself, this is a very simple movement that Shrutee has done and that is giving me so much relief. If I could move this way every day, I won’t have to worry about my pain. THAT is amazing actually!
[In our sessions, Jennifer learned things about herself that surprised her. Essentially I was helping her learn about herself in ways that she could do something about. She could see clearly the value of mindfulness and took over the responsibility.
When a client in my practice does that, the learning becomes exponential. We are no longer stacking the hour a week improvement against all the remaining hours of perpetuating the painful habit. We are taking the lesson into life! When that happens, I have seen decades of pain reversed.]
What potential will she realize now?
S: How has it changed your life?
J: I have a hectic life – my work schedule and my family schedule is pretty tight. So I am not doing much outside of that yet. But whatever I am doing, whether I am with family or work, I am doing that with the same energy all day. Okay, maybe around 10pm I’m a bit tired..;)
I can do what I want, without the frustration that I am constantly thinking that I am in pain and why I have to do this and that. I can do it in a joyful way and am enjoying what I do. I spend time with my daughter, my husband and do my household chores and work with the same ease. I feel light and happy!
[Jennifer emanates a sense of joy. The physical sense of lightness and ease translates to a mental and emotional sense of joy and power. When she experiences herself this way, how would she relate to her pregnancy, how would she come to her birthing process? What would she bring to her relationships at work and with family? This is not just about getting rid of pain. It is about living the life you want.]
