One of my students wanted to know ‘the right way’ of doing a movement I was asking to do. You know, how we all have the part of us that wants to know if we’re doing it ‘right’? And I said to her, ‘Go ahead, do it the wrong way’!
Because she didn’t do it the one ‘right’ way – the one way the teacher asked her to do, by the end of class, she figured out 6 ways of doing the same thing. And she could tell, which ones made more sense because they were easier and she got further.
Because she brought her curiosity and experimented, she got to find out what works and what doesn’t to meet the intention she’s after. And so the benefits of the class will stick with her longer.
In what areas are you seeking someone to tell you ‘the right way’ or the ‘right answer’? In what areas would you consider upping your curiosity and dare to do something ‘the wrong way’? In other words, get into it, to experiment and be open to finding out?!
