In person, hands-on sessions for pain management

STEP 1

I will help tone down the intensity of your pain - unwinding from old compensations/patterns and re-educating your body and your brain to move better. We build the momentum with each session. You can expect windows of relief and ease in moving through your day to day life. You might surprise yourself with more energy for other thoughts and activities than thinking about your pain 24/7!

STEP 2

The focus of the hands-on treatment shifts to engaging and empowering you. Once your mind isn’t constantly occupied with pain, you will have mental bandwidth and physical capacities that we will nurture during and outside our sessions. You can start taking small steps to take ownership with making subtle changes to the unconscious habits in your day to day life.  You will begin practicing an individualized, curated program at home in ways that will empower you wayyy beyond the duration of our work.

STEP 3

You will cultivate a solid understanding of body habits that perpetuate your pain + a powerful self-care and body movement practice that complements your lifestyle and fuels your passions. You will hone skills to listen to your body and cultivate  resilience that is grounded in compassion and scientific knowledge of biomechanical principles -  away from repetitive and mindless exercise routines.

After my first session, I could stand and hold myself in a way that was actually alleviating the pain in my knee!

“So much happened in just 5 sessions with Shrutee! I had a torn meniscus in my right knee and was on crutches., and taking 3 Advils (2x daily!).  After 5 weeks, I’m walking around with no pain! Run down stairs, stand-up and have conversations, I can teach and meet the children in my classroom where I need to meet them. And no more Advil! You’re not just in the physical realm, you’re touching into other realms. It's this holistic picture and yet with an immediate and lasting result you don’t find in other places.”

After just  5 sessions, I learned to actively do things to help myself.

“I came to Shrutee with lower back, neck and shoulder pain that went from bad to worse with being pregnant. I wasn't able to sit or stand for more than a few minutes or concentrate at work. I had disturbed sleep and was basically exhausted from being in pain. I got relief in my first session and after 5 sessions, I learned to actively do things to help myself. I end the day on a high note, playing with my daughter, cooking and catching up with my husband .”

“Shrutee is a human movement expert! I can apply this awareness in simple ways, while running my business.”

“She helps me understand what I am doing that gives me the cranky, achy back. And then shows me what to do instead. My back feels great and I have the weekend energy for tenuous hikes with amazing views at Mt Rainier!”

Frequently Asked Questions

What are we actually going to do in the consultation? Are we going to talk about what you would do or are we actually going to do something about my pain? Will I feel better after the consultation is over?

A consult is our first 1:1 meeting pertaining to the challenge you’d like to solve and informs us of what game changing strategy it will take to make the breakthrough you desire. You’ll get a very good taste for the results you can expect to get momentum with, if we choose to work together. Most clients find an immediate respite during their first session, one they often report they hadn’t found in years.

Think of this time as organized in three parts. Part 1 usually takes 5-10 minutes. We get to know each other in the context of the challenge and I ask follow up questions from the intake form you fill out ahead of time. I might ask you to walk around or simulate an activity where this challenge shows up most.

Part 2 is the majority of our time (30-40 minutes) where we dive right into solving this challenge. I will get you comfortable lying down unless our context from part 1 requires us to work in an upright orientation. I use my touch to start a conversation with your body and nervous system; I listen and respond to your non-verbal cues (skeletal, muscle and movement patterns). There could be some verbal guidance as well.

Part 3 is the last 5-10 minutes of our time. You get to feel the qualitative change in the state of your mind and body. You sense it in the upright activity we chose from part 1 (walking, sitting, running, skiing, knitting etc). I share specific things I discerned that point to whether we’re a good fit to get the results you desire. You reflect on your experience. If you’re interested in working together, I share the options and we go from there.

What kind of clients and pain have you worked with? Can you help with my kind of pain?

Over the years, I’ve worked with a diverse range of pain points and diagnoses including plantar fasciitis, bunions, reynaud, knee pain and hip pain with and without injury or surgery, back pain, sciatic pain, neck, jaw pain and related dizziness, shoulder and arm issues like carpal tunnel, tennis elbow; fibromyalgia, sleep issues, posture, tail bone/pubic pain pre and post pregnancy.

The pain you’re having in one part of your body is inextricably linked to other parts of you. You just may not be aware of the connections and/or don’t know how to work with them in a way that can provide lasting relief. This is my specialty from 5.5 years of training in studying movement, bones and muscles in a neuroscientific context. All that said, the proof of the pudding is in the consultation, I say!

If you don’t see your pain/diagnosis here or aren’t sure if I work with your challenge, please contact me and we can have a more in depth conversation about it.

Do you work with people that do NOT have debilitating pain? I have off and on level of discomfort that I’m trying to prevent from becoming debilitating pain. Am I broken enough for you?

Anybody can learn how to move better in their body. When you move better, you don’t suffer pain from compression, imbalance, torque, friction and degeneration, you also improve functional qualities like propulsion, proprioception, balance, strength and stamina that help you to pursue an active life for much longer and improve performance if that’s your jam. If you have off and on discomfort, that means that we can quickly get to teaching you lifelong skills to keep your body healthy for a long time!

Do you work with athletes?

Yes! I love working with athletes. Your body awareness is strong and our work will hugely empower you to enjoy your sport better, longer and reduce risk of injury.

I routinely work with equestrians and other athletes like hikers, skiers, runners and bikers, triathletes. These could be hobbyists wanting to incorporate fun, companionship, time for self or lifetime passion with a sport.

With equestrians we work to improve their stance, balance their pelvis in the saddle, finding their heel, capacity to better communicate with their horse etc. With other athletes we work on a range of things including improving speed, stamina, turning, reducing repetitive strain and risk of re-injury and capacity to have an active life for a long time while maintaining their physical integrity.

Will it take 4/6 month commitment for me to see results?

Not necessarily. It depends on the extent of your discomfort and your life. We decide this during the consultation. My intent is for you to see results during the consultation itself.

For clients in a lot of discomfort or long term pain, I can say from experience that it typically takes about 2 months to get to a point where pain is not defining your day to day. From then on, you start to learn how to sustain the improvement. The duration of the treatment includes not only getting you out of pain but also helping you learn the ropes to sustain this freedom on your own in your day to day life as well as while pursuing new activities and adventures that you might want to pursue as you feel better. As outlined in the steps above, this takes unlearning from deeply ingrained body habits and making the paradigm shift in approach that is different from what you might have been exposed to before.
